Newforma celebrated International Women’s Day with a powerful panel discussion on accelerating action for women’s equality in the AEC industry. The conversation brought together industry leaders who shared their experiences, challenges, and insights on fostering a more inclusive and dynamic workplace. From diversifying teams to embracing technological change, the discussion underscored the importance of opportunity, flexibility, and mentorship in advancing women’s careers. By highlighting the need for diverse perspectives and equitable growth paths, the panel emphasized that true progress comes from collective action and continuous learning.

The International Women’s Panel brings together a distinguished group of women who have made a significant impact in the AEC industry. Each panelist brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and insight into the challenges and opportunities within the field. Leading the discussion is Tara Anderson, Vice President of Customer Success at Newforma, who is passionate about driving innovation and efficiency in project management.

Joining her is Sarah Treas, Senior Document Control Specialist at HNTB, whose expertise in document control plays a vital role in streamlining complex projects. Susan Koenigs, Director of Digital Practices at AEI, brings her extensive knowledge of digital transformation and process optimization to the conversation. Karen Delgado, Director of Learning and Knowledge at Colliers Engineering and Design, is dedicated to advancing education and professional development within the industry. Trish Buzan, who recently retired after 35 years in the field—34 of which she served as CIO and Principal at NEC Architecture—offers invaluable perspectives on leadership and technology in AEC. Rounding out the panel is Michelle Tremblay, Senior Project Coordinator at HDR, who began her career as an electrical engineer and has since contributed to numerous successful projects. Together, these remarkable women will share their experiences, insights, and strategies for fostering innovation, diversity, and growth in the AEC industry.

A key theme of the discussion was the importance of diverse backgrounds in problem-solving. Panelists emphasized that bringing in professionals from outside traditional AEC roles—such as those with financial or technology backgrounds—adds fresh perspectives to industry challenges. The conversation also highlighted the critical role of mentorship, with panelists sharing pivotal career moments where guidance and support helped them navigate obstacles. Many recounted experiences of being underestimated on job sites and in meetings, emphasizing how confidence and expertise are essential for overcoming biases and proving competence.

Technology’s role in leveling the playing field was another focal point. As digital tools continue to reshape workflows, women have a unique opportunity to lead the charge in emerging areas like AI and automation. Panelists stressed that by embracing new technologies, women can position themselves as industry leaders and innovators. The discussion concluded with a call for greater allyship, urging male colleagues to support women’s professional growth by treating them as equals, recognizing their contributions, and being mindful of workplace dynamics. Through collaboration and awareness, the AEC industry can build a future that empowers and uplifts women at every level.
